Being a zone pusher I have some unusual plants such as hardy banana, windmill palm, and Japanese aralia, and less common trees such as a southern magnolia called Brakens Brown Beauty.
Our front yard is Xeriscape with a dry creek bed. You’ll see several flowering plumb trees and evergreens as well as ornamental grasses. Back yard is pavers with man made creek and waterfalls, full of many annuals and perennials.
We’ve been working on our garden since we moved in almost 14 years ago. We’ve turned our backyard from all grass to a little oasis. We have several different “rooms” including a pond area, an orchard, a pavilion, and a gazebo area. Our pond is shaded and natural looking, with koi and a fountain. We have many different types of trees: Catalpa, Tulip Popular, Willow, Weeping Alaskan Cypress, Sycamore, Forest Pansy Redbud, Weeping Purple Fountain Beech, and several others. We have several areas with different outdoor seating examples, and a lovely blue fountain in our front yard. We have different types of shade plants, sun plants, and shrubs. We have big hostas, japanese painted ferns, and dead nettle. We also have a few different types of roses, ninebark, red tip photinia, and Ozark Primrose to name a few. In our front yard, we’ve added many annuals to give it lots of color. Our front flowerbed is raised with a wooden tiered border, which helps it to stand out. We have 2 areas with pavers and crushed rock pathways. I think our yard is definitely a good example of what you can do over time, with patience and dedication and learning as you go along. We aren’t super wealthy and we do everything ourselves so it really is a labor of love for us and brings us a lot of joy. We also love that it brings our neighbors joy to walk by and to enjoy all the flowers and plants.
The Christensens used the concepts they learned in the free Localscapes classes to DIY their way to a dream yard. By doing all of the work themselves, they were able to save enough money to include a number of special features, beautiful seating areas and so many ways to use the yard and simply enjoy the fruits (literally) of their labors. Their landscape may look like the lushest yard on the block but requires only half as much water to achieve it.
I love to garden! I enjoy experimenting with all different flowers and shrubs. I feel like a garden is always a work in progress and I love to add to mine each year to see what grows well. I especially love my backyard because it is a place where I can relax in my hammock, listen to the sound of our water feature, and enjoy peonies, columbine, hellebore, clematis, heuchera, and a rising sun redbud tree among other plants while escaping the hustle and bustle of life. We have a unique water feature in the corner of our yard that you’ll want to see!
This has been about 15 years in the making, inspired from places I’ve lived, as well as the botanical gardens at Thanksgiving point. In medical school, I studied outside as opposed to libraries as much as possible—it always helped feed my soul and make me feel more alive. When I moved into my home, I started with nothing but dirt, but formed a plan for the design and clung to my vision, even though my budget was tight. Little by little—first stamped concrete, then a gazebo kit, then a fountain and pavers. Then my husband welded a trellis for my birthday 4 years ago which created the best feature – a walkway of Eden climbing roses. It’s always a work in progress, but truly a labor of love! A place to unwind and escape to—especially while being a front line physician through the covid pandemic.
We remodeled our home a few years ago and ended the remodel with a landscape redo. I wanted a peaceful retreat in the backyard where I could go to relax, breathe in the surrounding beauty, listen to the sounds of nature and meditate. With the help of Urban Garden Company and Wasatch Garden Works, we have everything we ever dreamed about and both my husband and myself spend countless hours daily enjoying our gorgeous, hidden gem.
We’re not gardeners per se, but we have created a lovely garden design which includes a waterfall, pergola, pavilion, rose arbors and playhouse. Joanne also takes thrift store finds and creates magical additions to her garden.
Ron & Leslie Nuttall are long time residents of Provo. Their garden is located on property that has been in their family since 1890. It includes both flowers and vegetables. There is also a 9 hole mini-golf course that is part of our garden. We love working and relaxing in our garden. This is a garden you are NOT going to want to miss!
We moved into our home in 2008 and the whole yard was completely dead, filled with weeds. Since then, we have installed raised garden beds, attractive metal fencing, wisteria arch, rose arch, clematis arch and English cottage potting shed. The garden also features long borders with perennials, benches for seating, three separate rose gardens, weeping lace leaf maples and a Golden chain tree! Deanna takes trips to England for inspiration.
The Selcks took a Localscapes class in 2017, then immediately removed their entire yard to build the Localscape of their dreams. They enlisted some professional help but provided much of the labor and ideas themselves. If you’re a fan of “a place for everything and everything in it’s place,” you won’t want to miss this landscape.
I developed a love of gardening because of my mom. We always worked outside together. I’ve had my own garden for 15 years. Now I have children that love to be in the garden with me enjoying the same things my mom and I did. Our yard is not huge, but we live on a corner lot and have designed it around many flowerbeds including a picket fence and gateway to the backyard, an entertaining paradise in the backyard with 2 fireplaces, a small courtyard enclosed by a semi private brickwall, and an expansive view of the Salt Lake Valley that can’t be beat.
My husband built our contemporary home in 1981 and we have enjoyed planting our garden with perennials that bring interest to each season. We bought and planted over 25 potted trees that we used in our home for Christmas trees and then planted them over our backyard hill after each Christmas. We love our 3 wind sculptures by Lyman Whitaker and enjoy the beauty they add to our yard. Last Spring we added 2 Xeriscape areas to our garden – replacing a lawn area and a planted perennial area. We have enjoyed the grasses and succulents in those new areas.
They won’t look exactly like this, but you can kind of get the idea….when we’re done, they will be so adorable and so easy to
