The Barnes Garden

We’ve been working on our garden since we moved in almost 14 years ago and turned our backyard from all grass to a little oasis. We have several different “rooms” including a pond area, an orchard, a pavilion, and a gazebo area. Our pond is shaded and natural looking, with koi and a fountain.

We have many different types of trees: Catalpa, Tulip Popular, Willow, Weeping Alaskan Cypress, Sycamore, Forest Pansy Redbud, Weeping Purple Fountain Beech, and several others. There are  several areas with different outdoor seating examples, and a lovely blue fountain in our front yard.

We have different types of shade plants, sun plants, and shrubs. Also, you’ll see big hostas, japanese painted ferns, and dead nettle. We also have a few different types of roses, ninebark, red tip photinia, and Ozark Primrose to name a few.

In our front yard, we’ve added many annuals to give it lots of color. Our front flowerbed is raised with a wooden tiered border, which helps it to stand out. We have two areas with pavers and crushed rock pathways.

I think our yard is definitely a good example of what you can do over time, with patience and dedication and learning as you go along. We aren’t super wealthy and we do everything ourselves so it really is a labor of love for us and brings us a lot of joy. We also love that it brings our neighbors joy to walk by and to enjoy all the flowers and plants.
